Why we should thank Mathew Kukah

Why we should thank Mathew Kukah

Professor Abdussamad Umar Jibia

Monday, 7 January 2019

Muslims of Northern Nigeria are a wonderful people. For long we have been singing Islam and using it whenever it is to our advantage. Our Islamic scholars use their positions to get close to people in power. It pays handsomely. They are made members of Islamic related committees, be they committees on Hajj, Shariah, Zakkah, hisbah, Da’wah, etc. Opportunities became even greater with the coming of this fourth republic when every Northern Governor began to launch and relaunch one kind of Shariah-related programme or another to help improve his popularity. Scholars who were hitherto fighting in the name of aqeedah differences came together as Shariah champions to work for the "progress of Islam".

Our emirs who are the officially-recognized leaders of the Muslim Ummah have been getting their allocation from the budgets of local Governments in their domain and serve as umbrella for retired civil and military officials who pay to get crowned with one traditional title or another. They go with every Government and their relations and cronies are favoured in Government contracts and appointments.

Our politicians use Islam as an opportunity to get to power. If you doubt this ask Yakubu Dogara, for example, to contest the Governorship of Bauchi state or any Christian to try contesting such an office in any of the predominantly Muslim Northern states. Buhari is only popular because he is a Muslim. Should he renounce Islam before February 16, we don’t pray for that, he will lose the presidential election. At a point in time, every politician who wanted to win an election in the North had to lie that he will enforce Shariah law if elected.

The rest of us are either working or doing one legitimate business or another. Yet, despite what Allah Has done to us and our use of His religion to get what we want, I don’t know of any formidable initiative to solve the problem of almajirci in the North. Even our leaders only condemn as the rest of us do.

All of a sudden, the Christians came up with an idea. That since we don’t seem to care about these our underaged children roaming the streets with plastics begging for food, the Church will create a centre for them, in which they will feed, clothe and shelter them. In addition, they will teach them vocation alongside the Qur’an with whose teaching they will not interfere. To kick-start this project is no other than Reverend Mathew Hassan-Kukah. Mathew Kukah is a Northern Christian intellectual who has lived in the North and interacted with all manners of Northern Muslims from the most ordinary commoner to the Sultan who is his close friend. In fact, if you say Mathew Hassan-Kukah was posted to Sokoto diocese because of his relationship with the Sultan you would be right.

As a Northerner, an intelligent one for that matter, Mathew Kukah understands the sensibilities of Muslims and would thus do his best to hide any proselytization agenda at the initial stage.
Now, with the announcement of the Christian intent, everybody remembered that the almajirai are Muslims and that they will end up becoming Christians if such centres are established. Great, we now remember that we should not allow these innocent children to be converted to Christianity. What should we do?

What one would expect of a responsible people faced with this type of challenge is to thank the Church for reminding them of their responsibility and come up with a more comprehensive programme than that of Mathew Kukah. Unfortunately, the kind of sentiments being expressed and the fact that more than a year after Kukah mooted this idea nothing has come up from our religious leaders and our “Shariah compliant” politicians portray us as a people not serious.

“The almajiri system has outlived its usefulness and should be banned” says one commentator. “Jabir, Sudais, Husary and other world renown Quranic reciters did not attend tsangaya, so we should do away with it” says another. Others say after banning the system, Government should be advised to improve schools in the rural areas so that the would-be almajirai will now have sound education. Plus many such funny ideas. Perhaps the most responsible comment I read on the Kukah initiative is the one by Prof. Ishaq Akintola in which he requested Northern Muslims to empower Islamic NGOs to cater for the almajiri.

For those calling for the total banning of the almajiri system, let’s weigh the options.

Leaving the tsangaya system will maintain the almajirai on the streets. As it is now, very few of them will end up being scholars but many of them would end up being petty traders, business tycoons, bus conductors and drivers, motorpark touts, Hausa musicians, etc. Others will be in Kukah centres (He promised to train 10 million almajirai to acquire skills) and there will be many of them. Some of the products of the Mathew centres will be sponsored to study abroad and come back to integrate with their communities. They will be Christians and since they will have money with them they will attract villagers who are their blood to Christianity. With this, Sokoto state may have a Christian governor in future.

Banning the tsangaya system will return the almajirai to their parents in the villages. The most lucrative business in the rural areas now is banditry and kidnapping. They can kill anyone to get money. Those who think politicians will establish good schools to cater for these children are probably not aware of the conditions of the existing Government schools.

Like the Hausa man will put it, “gaba kura baya sayaki”. Neither option is sweet. The only thing left for us is to come up with another alternative. The best option as far as yours sincerely is concerned is for the Muslim Ummah to come up with a comprehensive programme to cater for the almajiri child.

Meanwhile, many thanks to Rev. Hassan-Kukah for the wake-up.

Author of Islamic Studies books, Aisha Lemu, dies at 79
By Jaafar Jaafar -January 5, 2019

Aisha Lemu, foremost educationist, author of many Islamic Studies books and founder of Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria, FOMWAN, has died at the age of 79.

Multiple sources told DAILY NIGERIAN that she died on Saturday in Minna, Niger State capital.

Director-General of NITDA, Isa Pantami also confirmed the death, praying for the repose of her soul.

“May the Almighty Allah forgive and be Merciful to Shaykha Hajiya Aisha (The wife of Shaykh Ahmad Lemu)… Furthermore, may He (SWT) forgive our late parents and reward them with Firdaus,” Mr Pantami tweeted.

Wikipedia Biography
Aisha Lemu was born in Poole, Dorset, in 1940, as Bridget Aisha Honey. At the age of thirteen, she began to question her faith and began exploring other religions including Hinduism and Chinese Buddhism. She studied at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), pursuing her interest in Chinese history, language and culture. While there, she met Muslims who gave her Islamic literature to read and she converted to Islam at the Islamic Cultural Centre in 1961, during her first year of study. She subsequently helped to found the Islamic Society at SOAS, becoming its first secretary, and also assisted in the formation of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies.

After graduating from SOAS, Lemu studied for a postgraduate qualification to teach English as a foreign language and while doing so, she met her future husband, Sheikh Ahmed Lemu, who had been studying at another college of the University of London and was involved in the Islamic activities around the institution.[2] Having obtained her Postgraduate Certificate in Education, she moved to Kano in Nigeria in August 1966 to teach at the School for Arabic Studies there, where Sheikh Ahmed Lemu worked as headmaster. They married in April 1968, with Aisha becoming his second wife. She subsequently moved to Sokoto to take up the position of principal of the Government Girls College.

Sheikh Ahmed Lemu was Grand Qadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal of the State of Niger when it was founded in 1976, and Aisha was principal of the Women’s Teachers College in Minna from then until 1978. The couple founded the Islamic Education Trust, which now operates in several Nigerian states has offices and a library, includes a publisher, primary and secondary school and adult education centre for women. Lemu was a member of the Islamic Studies Panel, set up by the Nigerian Educational Research Council, which was to revise the national Islamic curriculum for different school levels.

In 1985, Lemu founded the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) with other Muslim women and was elected as its first national Amirah for four years. Lemu served as a civil servant after this term of office.

She died on January 5, 2019 at Minna, Nigeria.

Shah Rukh Khan Regrets Not Getting a National Film Award

Shah Rukh Khan Regrets Not Getting a National Film Award

Megastar Shah Rukh Khan has regretted he is yet to receive a national film award while none of his movies has ever made it to events such as the Kolkata International Film Festival, which, however, showcased the trailer of the actor's upcoming movie 'Zero' at the opening ceremony on Saturday.

The hugely popular actor, addressing the opening ceremony at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, said he was invited to film festivals either to dance or say some nice words welcoming people, and not for any intellectual deliberations.

"I have done 70 films so far, but the only reason film festivals call me is either to dance or come and just speak about welcoming the delegates, and being nice to people, and not do anything intellectual.

"Reason for that is I am not very intelligent. And I am not very smart," he said, in an apparently zestful tone while speaking at the opening ceremony of the country's second oldest film festival attended by a crowd of over ten thousand.

However, SRK said, he has become "smarter" and more "intellectual" after getting to know Kolkata while spearheading the Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders for 12 years.

"And the 12 years that I have been in Kolkata with a cricket team, Kolkata Knight Riders, I am becoming smarter. And I am becoming much more intellectual, spending time in Bengal, with all the wonderful stalwarts of cinema, and all the people I keep meeting.

"So, maybe, in the next ten years, there will come a time, when one of my film will get selected for an international festival of this kind of rating. It's really unfortunate and sad, I have never got a national award," he said, soon after receiving a crystal trophy from the organisers of the KIFF.

"The only award is what I got today, that KIFF, that Mamatadi (West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) so sweetly gave me. It's a special crystal award," he said, to a tumultuous applause, as Banerjee seemed visibly pleased.

Khan then sought Banerjee's permission to "behave a little cheaply" and screen the trailer of 'Zero'.

"So I want to seek Mamatadi's permission and behave a little cheaply, if that's all right, because if you have a younger brother like me, there is full freedom to behave as you wish to.

"So I know that none of my films will be ever, ever, ever, ever, ever played in a festival. They don't deserve too, maybe. But I have got a trailer of my film 'Zero', so I want to request Mamatadi."

The trailer was greeted with huge cheers and shouts of "Shah Rukh, Shah Rukh" from the film buffs.

SRK also playfully pulled Banerjee's leg, by referring to Mumbai Film superstar Amitabh Bachchan - seated in the dais - being asked to inaugurate the festival year after year and deliver the keynote speech.

"Mamata di is extremely smart and beautiful. What she has done is she made sure that the biggest two jobs should be given to the great Mr Amitabh Bachchan, and myself.

"But the intelligent job of coming and talking here and making a point that makes the festival come alive, she has kept it to Mr Bachchan. And the tomfoolery she has left to me."

4 Biggest Jaw-Droppers at the 2018 People's Choice Awards

4 Biggest Jaw-Droppers at the 2018 People's Choice Awards

Behold, the power of the people. The People's Choice Awards made their debut on E! with a star-studded evening of awards, tributes and OMG-inducing moments. Hey, when you get the likes of Nicki Minaj and Jimmy Fallon in the same room as the fans who voted for them.

The night was peppered with many big winners, like Blake Shelton, Shadowhunters and the Kardashians, and plenty of calls to honor both veterans and the firefighters and volunteers battling the deadly Woolsey and Camp fires in California. And of course, there were off-the-cuff acceptance speeches. These were the biggest jaw-droppers of the 2018 People's Choice Awards.

*1. Nicki Minaj's saucy dedications.*

Not only did the rapper start the show off with a bang, but she went on to take home the Female Artist of 2018 and Album of 2018 awards. During her acceptance speeches, Minaj thanked the fans, her management, God and all the queens out there. She also thanked Donatella Versace for her dress and then, said "Michael B. Jordan is going to be taking this off of me tonight." Later, she dedicated an award to how Kim Kardashian's "ass in that dress tonight."

*2. Gwen Stefani, come on up!*

After The Voice won Competition TV Show of 2018, Blake Shelton and Carson Daly took to the stage to accept the trophy, and called Gwen Stefani up on stage with them.

"I want to thank Gwen Stefani before Blake does," Daly said. Then Shelton cut in and added, "All-time favorite coach right there. I love her."

Then Daly called Stefani up on stage, getting the crowd to chant for her. "What am I doing? Oh my gosh, I'm so excited to be with Blake Shelton," she said.

"They're going to get a room," Daly said about the singing couple.

*4. Danai Gurira is a total badass.*

The Walking Dead and Black Panther star was on the stage many, many times thanks to the Avengers wins as well as taking home one of her own, Action Star of 2018. She was voted tops over Chris Pratt, Ryan Reynolds, Chris Hemsworth and Chadwick Boseman. She thanked Black Panther director Ryan Coogler for entrusting women as collaborators and the "beautiful men" she shared the category with. "Thank you for affirming women and girls, when given the chance to hang with the boys, can hang with the best of them," she said.

SRK, Aamir's Recent Non-Successes Are Cautionary Tales for Has Salman Dabangg 3

SRK, Aamir's Recent Non-Successes Are Cautionary Tales for Has Salman Dabangg 3

It was a couple of days ago when Arbaaz Khan, in an exlusive interview with Zoom TV Digital, had confirmed that his next production Dabangg 3 was all set to go on floors around February-March next year. Arbaaz had revealed that the script of the film had been locked. He had also shared that the technicians and actors, too, had been finalised. Reportedly, he was targetting a Christmas 2019 release for the film.

However, if a latest report on Bollywood Hungama is anything to go by, the film might not hit the screens before 2020. The report states that Salman, the face of the Dabangg franchise, does not want to take any chance as far as the script of the film is concerned. To ensure that the script is watertight, he has instructed his team to work hard on it.

According to sources mentioned in the report, Salman has become cautious by the way big-ticket films such as Jab Harry Met Sejal, Tubelight and Race 3 have suffered at the box-office. The poor performance of the recently-released Thugs of Hindostan has only added to his worries.

It is clear that Salman now wants his team to come out with the best script possible. Unless that happens, the film will not hit the floors. In such a scenario, it is most likely that the superstar will miss his Christmas 2019 date with the audience.

As against what is being spread on all media, that 50-60 people were killed during the recent Kasuwan Magani crisis in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna state, hundreds have actually been killed. More than 300 people have been killed, hundreds missing and property worth millions of Naira destroyed.

Kasuwan Magani is a town along Kaduna - Kachia road in Kajuru LG of southern Kaduna. The town is mainly dominated by Adara tribe with quite significant number of Muslims within the city. The Christians there are mostly from the surrounding villages and towns. The town is mostly bedevilled by religious crises, the recent was in March 2018 before this current one.

From how the news of the crises is being spread, you would actually ascertain who the instigators and who the victims are. We have registered bigots and fanatics that talk harsh whenever Christians are killed in any unfortunate attack or crisis. But till now, no word of condemnation from those and/or CAN. This is enough to tell you who instigated the crisis and why.

The most recent Kasuwan Magani crisis was actually planned and coordinated to occur on market day, an is a continuation of the Hausa/Fulani ethnic cleansing that started in 2011 post election violence, where more than 1000 Hausa/Fulani communities were wiped out. It took me time to get enough details and facts of what really transpired during this recent crisis from the eye witnesses.

It all started with a little misunderstanding between Muslim and Christian youths, then as usual, the Christian youths took offence and started killing traders. The target is mostly on market day so they can inflict enough casualties on the traders. Hundreds of traders from Funtua, Zaria, Kano, Ikara, Soba, Saminaka and other places have been killed by the Adara youth and their vehicles, items and property worth millions of Naira burnt.

Most of the traders were not too conversant with the villages surrounding Kasuwan Magani, so in their attempt to escape the crisis, they fell in the trap set by the Adara youth in various villages and they got killed. Hundreds of bodies have been recovered and hundreds still missing, no one knows their fate.

From the recent crisis of March 2018, we had expected that government would take action and put permanent security structures along and within the town to prevent passersby and traders from being lynched same way Berom youth are lynching people. But no action was taken. It took hours of mayhem before the arrival of security to save people and their wealths.

There is an armoury military barracks at Kachia which was weakened by the then President Obasanjo when he relocated the armoury to Ikeja Military Cantonment in 2002, which led to armoury explosion then. More security structures for both police and army need to be established along that road and around Kasuwan Magani to save people and avert future occurrences.

At this juncture, we call on Kaduna state government to relocate the market at Kasuwan Magani to a more serene area to save traders and their lives since it is clear the Adara youth are not happy with the wealth being generated in their area, that is why they kill and burn trader's wealth every now and then.

BOMB KILLS 7 Security Personnel in Burkina Faso

*💣Bomb Kills 7⃣ Security Personnel in 🇧🇫Burkina Faso*

Seven members of the security forces were killed early Tuesday after their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in eastern Burkina Faso, security sources said. The fatalities were gendarmes and troops who had been sent to the town of Pama as reinforcements after a police station there came under attack, they said.

One of the sources said the blast, caused by an improvised explosive device, killed eight people. The earlier attack in Pama lasted an hour and but caused no casualties, although the police station was set ablaze. There were no immediate details about on the roadside blast, but it bore the hallmark of attacks attributed to jihadists that have shaken the country's east in recent months.

The Sahel state, one of the poorest countries in the world, has been battling Islamist violence since 2015, starting with cross-border incursions in the north. The recent surge of attacks in the east is the result of pressure on jihadist insurgents in neighbouring Mali and Niger, experts say.

FRENCH MINISTER Nicolas Hulot Resigns On Live Radio In Frustration

*French Minister🇫🇷 Nicolas Hulot Resigns on Live Radio📻 in Frustration*

French Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot has resigned on live radio, in a dramatic announcement that caught even President Emmanuel Macron by surprise. The former TV presenter and green activist said he had quit after a series of disappointments in attempts to address climate change and other environmental threats.

Mr Hulot said he felt "all alone" in government. The decision was taken on the spot and, he added, even his wife did not know. "I am going to take... the most difficult decision of my life," the minister said in an interview on France Inter radio. "I am taking the decision to leave the government."

Mr Hulot said that he had not told Mr Macron or Prime Minister Edouard Philippe of his decision, because he believed they would try to talk him out of it. Mr Hulot is a popular figure in France, and correspondents say his departure is a major blow to Mr Macron, whose ratings are currently poor.

Government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said he regretted Mr Hulot's resignation. "I don't understand why he is stepping down when we had many successes in the first year that are to his credit," he told

Russia to Hold Biggest War Games Since Cold War

*Russia 🇷🇺to Hold Biggest War⚔ Games Since Cold War*

Russia plans to hold massive war games involving 300,000 personnel next month - its biggest military manoeuvres since the Cold War. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said units from China and Mongolia would take part in the exercise, at military ranges in central and eastern Russia.

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said units from China and Mongolia would take part in the exercise, at military ranges in central and eastern Russia. He compared the "Vostok-2018" war games to Soviet manoeuvres in 1981, which involved a pretend attack on Nato. The exercises come at a time of rising tension between Nato and Russia.

Nato reacted to Russia's annexation of the Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and its backing of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine with an increased deployment of forces in eastern Europe. Russia says the Nato build-up is unjustified and provocative.

Mr Shoigu said 36,000 tanks, armoured personnel carriers and armoured infantry vehicles would take part in Vostok-2018, from 11 to 15 September, along with more than 1,000 aircraft. "Vostok" is Russian for "east". Referring to the Soviet manoeuvres in 1981, he said: "In some ways they will repeat aspects of Zapad-81, but in other ways the scale will be bigger."

*China🇨🇳 Moves to End Two-Child👭 Limit, Finishing Decades of Family Planning*

The Chinese government could be moving to end birth restrictions, amid growing concerns over an ageing population and a dropping birth rate. Under current family planning rules, the majority of Chinese couples are limited to two children, following an easing of the country's notorious "one-child policy" in 2016. These restrictions now look set to be further relaxed under a new draft reform to the country's Civil Code, potentially allowing families to have multiple children for the first time in decades.

According to a brief statement released Tuesday by the National People's Congress, the newly revised code "will no longer retain the relevant content of family planning." The revised code won't be completed until March 2020 and there is no indication yet how exactly the change would be made, or whether any other restrictions or conditions might remain on Chinese families.

But a change to the country's strict family planning laws had been considered likely by experts for some time. "The government will lift the policy, to what degree they then go further with pre-natal policy is another issue, but I think they'll lift the policy in the foreseeable future," Therese Hesketh, a professor at the University College London's Institute for Global Health.

*Shruti Haasan🔉: I Worked with My Father, Kamal Haasan⭐ Several Times, I Would Love to Act with My Mum, Sarika*

Shruti Haasan says she would love to act with her mother, veteran actress Sarika, in a film. “I want to work with my mum. We run a production house and we just started working together… I worked with my father several times, I would love to act with my mum,” Shruti told IANS in Mumbai.

Being the daughter of talented actors, has it ever been pressurising for Shruti to deliver an impactful performance on screen? “No, It is my life, I wanted to make them proud and I knew they’d be proud that she’s working hard and that’s important. I have followed the beat of my own drum because the comparisons are really impossible for me to compete with. They both started when they were four-years-old, so, it’s difficult to even get into that head space…” she said.

The 32-year-old actress says she doesn’t take the comparisons on her. “I always knew there would be comparisons but I never wanted to take it on board,” she said.

Kareena Kapoor Gets Nostalgic about Raj Kapoor’s Landmark R K Studios

Bollywood’s iconic Kapoor family has collectively decided to sell the sprawling landmark RK Studio. Kareena Kapoor Khan says she has fond memories of the studio, built by her late legendary grandfather Raj Kapoor.

Kareena, who has been under the weather for a few days, told IANS: “I don’t know how far what is actually happening. In fact, I have been quite under the weather and I haven’t even met my father in the last four or five days… But of course, we have all grown up walking around in those corridors.”

“I think it’s probably something that the family has decided, so it’s upto my father and his brothers… If that’s what they have decided, so be it,” added the actress on the sidelines of the Lakme Fashion Week, where she was the showstopper for the finale show.

The Kapoor family has taken the tough decision of selling the 2⃣ acre RK Studio 70 years after it was established as it was not economically viable to rebuild it after it was gutted down in a fire last year.

Rishi Kapoor, in an interview to Mumbai Mirror on behalf of the family, said they were initially juggling with the idea of renovating the place with state-of-the-art technology, but the investment in rebuilding the studio would just not have yielded sufficient revenue to keep it going. He called it a “level headed decision”.

*Bhumi Pednekar Says It Is a Dream🗯 Come True to Bag Karan Johar’s Takht*

After creating her magic last year with Toilet-Ek Prem Katha and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Bhumi Pednekar has bagged one of the biggest films of her career with Takht. The period drama, directed by Karan Johar, also stars Kareena Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. Bhumi feels it is like a dream come for her.

Bhumi Pednekar recently revealed that she always hoped to work with him but never expected to score a Karan Johar film very early in her career. She said that he has a great vision, is a prolific filmmaker who has changed the filmmaking game. She was surprised when she got the film and she informed her parents immediately in excitement.

Talking the period drama but being tight lipped about her role, she said that the film is set in the Mughal era and will showcase the story of two warring brothers. As earlier reported, it will be a story based on the war between Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb reportedly played by Vicky Kaushal and elder brother Dara Shikoh reportedly played by Ranveer Singh. Kareena Kapoor Khan will essay the role of Aurangzeb’s sister and the first lady of the Mughal Empire, Jahanara Begum. Anil Kapoor will reportedly play the role of Shah Jahan. While Bhumi Pednekar’s role is yet to be confirmed, it seems like she will have a pivotal role in the magnum opus story.
